Online casino gambling popularity grows among college students
Many college students who start off playing Texas Hold 'Em with friends in high school, move on to online casino poker in college. The appeal of online gambling on campus is obvious: it's a click away. The online casino scene lures young people to play poker online by offering winners a free semester of tuition, frequent player points to be used at its online store, and more.
The number of American male college students who say they gamble at an online casino regularly has quadrupled since 2000. Worldwide it is a $12 billion-a-year industry, and nearly half of it comes from the United States. In the 2006 World Series of Poker, two of the ten players who made it to the final table were recent college graduates, and they took home about $2 million each. Some 2,500 online casino sites are marketed with teenagers and students in mind.
Many times, earnings at online casino sites have helped students pay tuition and helped them afford them nice vacations. Other times the students lose. Stephen Garabedian has advice for fellow students gambling online. Although his winning record is impressive - he made $17,000 from online casino poker in the past year and played in the World Series of Poker last month - he has a system: He brings a certain amount to the table, and after half an hour, if he hasn't met his goal, he turns off the computer. "It's so easy to let it get away from yourself," he says.
